OBJECT INTERPRETATION

Below is an object interpretation exercise by Autumn Smith. The object is from the Civil War exhibition at the Atlanta History Center in Atlanta, GA.

Object Interpretation

Picture

Turning Point Exhibition

The above image is an object that is currently apart of the Atlanta History Center's "Turning Point" exhibition. The object is currently a replication of a slave quarter or military infantry that houses a video related to African Americans during the War.
The lives of African Americans played a significant role in the Civil War, and the implications of the War affected their lives politically, economically, and socially. After the Civil War ended and Reconstruction began, White terror began to spread throughout the country, especially in the South. White terror created organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan that participated in "night rides" that resulted in damages and terror to African American homes and families.
The above object and space can be used and transformed into an interactive space that is a simulation of an African American family experiencing a night ride. The space can include visual, audio, and physical components to give visitors the perception that they are actually experiencing the event to a moderate degree. This component will give visitors a physical experience and offer visitor engagement. The purpose of the simulation will be to give visitors an experience of some of the terroristic events faced by African Americans following the end of enslavement.
