Atlanta History Center to Offer In-Person and Virtual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration
In-person and virtual offerings will include featured simulations, crafts, and story time author-talk and genealogy workshops
 
ATLANTA, Georgia (January 16-17, 2022) – On Sunday, January 16, 2022, and Monday, January 17, 2022, the Atlanta History Center will share a combination of in-person and virtual events and interactions to celebrate the legacy and life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The on-site events will be free. Admission to the museum will be free. Educational resources and events will be available virtually for free online. 
 
Included in this two-day event is the popular Martin Luther King jr. Day Author Talk featuring authors Akira Drake Rodriguez, Robert Hamilton, Arthur Dunning, Christopher R. Lawton, Laura E. Nelson, and Randy L. Reid. This discussion will be moderated by University of West Georgia graduate student Autumn Smith. This Author Talk will discuss "Unreconciled" Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Poor People's Campaign," "Diverging Spaces for Deviants: The Politics of Atlanta's Public Housing," 'Seen/Unseen: Hidden Lives in a Community of Enslaved Georgians" and how the philosophies of Dr. King relate to today's social climate. This event will be held at the AHC's Buckhead campus and live in Zoom Webinar at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm. The event will be recorded and available after the event on the Atlanta History Center's YouTube channel. The register is free but required for in-person 
 
Other activities will include timed educational simulation, that will allow visitors to experience a peaceful protest led by Dr. Martin Luther King and Lonnie King during the Atlanta Student Movement.  Arts and crafts, film and documentary showings, and Storytime for toddlers will also be activities. "The Atlanta History Center has found a way to truly encompass the life and legacy of Dr. King for their annual Martin Luther King Day Programming," says Atlanta History Center's graduate student, Autumn Smith. The program offers visitors experiences unique to Atlanta and allows visitors to participate in a day on and not a day off, 
 
 
"Dr. Martin Luther King and his philosophies and teachings have transcended through time," says President and CEO Sheffield Hale, "the purpose of this year's program is to highlight the philosophies Dr. King used to guide him through the Civil Rights Movement. This year we will also highlight Coretta Scott King and her contributions to making Martin Luther King Day famous for the city of Atlanta."
 
Over the last several years, the Atlanta History Center has offered a Martin Luther King Day program that has been a staple in Atlanta to celebrate Martin Luther King's day of service. This year's in-person and virtual aims to continue to be a landmark for Martin Luther King Day in Atlanta and fulfill the day of service. 
Atlanta History Center's campus will be open Monday this year for Martin Luther King Day on Monday, January 17. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Atlanta History Center strives to follow all CDC social distancing and hygiene requirements.

MARKETING PLAN

Public Relation
The Atlanta History Center, located in Buckhead, Georgia, will distribute a press release to local and state-wide media outlets publicizing the Martin Luther King Jr Day Program November 12, 2021. We will have advertisements placed on local radio stations such as Star94 and V103. The advertisements will feature president, Sheffield Hale and Vice-President of Digital Storytelling, Kristen Witherspoon discussing the new direction of the Atlanta History Center and how the new mission and vision of the AHC relates to the principles of Martin Luther King Day. 
 
We will create online advertisements for local school systems such as Atlanta Public Schools, Dekalb County, Fulton County, Cobb County and Gwinnett County. There will also be advertisements placed in local such as Atlanta magazine, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, social media platforms, Discover Atlanta and other local Atlanta news outlets. 
 
This program will be promoted through visual advertisements throughout the campus(s) of the Atlanta History Center for a month leading up to January 17, 2022, museum staff will highlight the program at the annual Christmas celebration at the AHC, and an Author Talk.

Paid advertisement featured on 2 radio stations from November to January. The radio stations that will be targeted will be V-103 and Star94. V-103 serves a demographic that the Atlanta History Center struggles to connect with. V-103 will offer the opportunity to gain exposure in communities in Atlanta that are not currently apart of the AHC community. Star94 is Atlanta’s leading POP radio station and has one of the largest listening demographics in Atlanta. Star94 will offer the opportunity to reach the greater Atlanta area and a demographic of people between the age of 18-40. 
 
 
Target Audience

  1. College students in Metro-Atlanta
    1. This audience will be targeted to promote higher education through the AHC and begin to form relationships with metro-Atlanta colleges such as, Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, Spelman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University and Agnes Scott. 
  2. Families
    1. This audience will target families with the age group between 5-50. This demographic is chosen to promote the Atlanta History Center as family friendly. 
  3. Underprivileged communities in metro-Atlanta
    1. This audience will target communities in the East and West side of Atlanta, such as Lithonia, Stone Mountain, West End, Vine City, and Bankhead. 
  4. Young adults (25-40)
    1. This audience will be targeted because the Atlanta History Center struggles with programming for young professionals in Atlanta. Targeting this group will help broaden the demographic of the AHC. 
 
All of the demographics will be targeted through radio advertisements and community poster placements. It is also an option to have AHC staff promote the event throughout these communities through physical distribution.
