PROGRAM BASICS
 
Brief Program Description: 
Inspired by Gary Pomerantz's 1996 book Where Sweet Auburn Meets Peachtree, the education program will highlight the cultural and political backgrounds of two of Atlanta's most prominent figures, Ivan Allen Jr and Maynard Jackson. The program will highlight the different upbringings of Allen and Jackson during the era of Jim Crow and their journey to political office. Where Sweet Auburn Meets Peachtree will also highlight the history of Auburn Avenue and Peachtree Street and their relation to Allen and Jackson. The author Gary Pomerantz's, will be invited annually to help facilitate a program for students.  
 

Educational Objective:
The educational objective of Where Sweet Auburn Meets Peachtree is to teach students about Ivan Allen Jr and Maynard Jackson and learn that people of different cultures and races can share life experiences. Students will learn about the lives of two of Atlanta's most prominent figures, Allen and Jackson, to understand how the stories of an African American and White American in Atlanta can be similar, prompting cultural empathy. Students will learn about Ivan Allen and the Allen family and Maynard Jackson, and the Dobbs family and their roles and influences in Atlanta. Students will learn basic information regarding topics of :
Jim Crow-The Atlanta Riot
Sweet Auburn historic district- John Wesley Dobbs
Peachtree-Piedmont Driving Club
Atlanta politics and policy-Jackson and Allen's Mayoral campaigns
 
 
 
Connection to current exhibits, collections, and programs
Where Sweet Auburn Meets Peachtree primarily relates to the Gatheround exhibition. The Gatheround exhibition focuses on historical events and individuals related to the city of Atlanta that aligns with Jackson, Allen, Peachtree, and Sweet Auburn. The Cyclorama exhibition also connects with the program, with Maynard Jackson being the Mayor who restored the cyclorama painting. The "Atlanta in 50 objects" and the "1996 Olympic exhibition and collection" also relate to the program with Maynard Jackson's involvement with the Olympic planning committee. The Atlanta History Center's photo collection also will benefit the program.

Where Sweet Auburn Meets Peachtree helps to promote the Atlanta History Centers strategic plan of "community, service, inclusivity, relevance, growth." The program promotes knowledge of the surrounding communities of the Center that includes the stories of traditionally marginalized groups.

Target audience
The target audience is 8th-grade students.

8th Grade
1. SS8H11 Evaluate the role of Georgia in the modern civil rights movement.
a. Explain Georgia's response to Brown v. Board of Education including the 1956 flag
and the Sibley Commission.
b. Describe the role of individuals (Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lewis), groups
(SNCC and SCLC) and events (Albany Movement and March on Washington) in the Civil Rights Movement.
c. Explain the resistance to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, emphasizing the role of Lester
Maddox
 
 
2. SS8E2 Evaluate the influence of Georgia-based businesses on the State's economic
growth and development.
b. Explain how entrepreneurs take risks to develop new goods and services to start a
business.
c. Evaluate the economic impact of various industries in Georgia including agricultural,
entertainment, manufacturing, service, and technology.

 
3. SS8H7 Evaluate key political, social, and economic changes that occurred in Georgia
during the New South Era.
a. Identify the ways individuals, groups, and events attempted to shape the New South;
include the Bourbon Triumvirate, Henry Grady, International Cotton Expositions, and Tom Watson and the Populists.
b. Analyze how rights were denied to African Americans or Blacks through Jim Crow
laws, Plessy v. Ferguson, disenfranchisement, and racial violence, including the 1906 Atlanta Riot.
c. Explain the roles of Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. DuBois, and Alonzo Herndon in
advancement of the rights of African Americans or Blacks in the New South Era.
d. Examine antisemitism and the resistance to racial equality exemplified in the Leo
Frank case.
 
 
4. SS8E2 Evaluate the influence of Georgia-based businesses on the State's economic

Marketing strategies
The marketing strategy for Where Sweet Auburn Meets Peachtree will play on the famous book by the same name. The program shall be promoted as a program that brings the book's ideas to life of the intersecting lives of Allen and Jackson. The program will be promoted to schools within the Metro-Atlanta area that follows the Georgia educational standards of 8hth grade Georgia History. An email blast will be sent to teachers on the mailing list. Educators from the museum will visit different middle schools in metropolitan to promote the program. An educational trunk will also be sent to different schools in the metro area with related materials to the program. For one of the program dates, the author of Where Sweet Auburn Meets Peachtree will be invited to be a guest educator for the education program.
 

Projected attendance:
The projected attendance for Where Sweet Auburn Meets Peachtree is school groups of about 40-45 students for an estimated two-hour visit.

5 minutes         Students are introduced to the three Educators
            -Educators will give students a short introduction to who they are, their position at the AHC,  and the history of the Atlanta History Center
5 minutes         Introduction to the program
            -Educators will tell inform students of the theme and purpose of the program
 
5 minutes         Ask students questions about previous knowledge
-Students will be asked questions about prior knowledge on Ivan Allen, Maynard Jackson, Auburn Avenue, and Peachtree
            Ex. Who was the first Black Mayor of Atlanta

-Discuss the childhood and early life of Maynard Jackson and Ivan Allen.
-Discuss the Politics and influence Allen and Jackson had on the City of Atlanta
 
 
 Move to Classroom 
50 minutes       Vision Board Activity
            -Students create a vision board of what they want Atlanta to look like. Students will cut out images from magazines that represent what Atlanta means to them

Program set-up (include technology for virtual programs):
Materials for vision board activity (poster boards, magazines, and writing utensils) need to be available for student in the classroom
 
 
 
Number and type of Staff Needed (Include Planning and Production/Day of Event):
Three Educators will be needed for the tour. The educators will be responsible for guiding the students through the museum and providing discussing the topics. Each educator will be responsible for the three different locations and all educators will assist in the vision board activity.
 
Measurement of Success
The success of the program will be determined o how interactive students are o the vision board activity. Students' participation in the vision board and enthusiasm is a qualitative measuring tool to use. Also, teacher and student evaluations can be administered at the end of the program. Teachers can be encouraged to submit a teacher evaluation after the visit.
