The Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance company was founded in 1898 by Solomon W. Walker, Thomas Walker, James C. Collier, and Walter Hornsby. The Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company was the first insurance provider for African Americans in Georgia and were once one of the largest employers of African Americans in Augusta, GA. The American Civil Rights Movement, unintentionally, crimpled economic prosperity for African American businesses, which resulted in the decline of the insurance company. In 1990 Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance company was sold to Atlanta Life Insurance. This type-writer was used by Walter Hornsby Jr, during his tenure as CEO of the Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company.

Lucy Craft Laney, born April 13, 1854, in Macon, Georgia, is a prominent historical figure in the development of African American education in Georgia. Through the projection of traditional education in the African American community with the Haines Normal and Industrial Institute, Laney contributed to the advancement of the infrastructure of United States education. In 1974 Governor Jimmy Carter selected to hag the first portraits of African Americans into the Georgia State Capitol, Lucy Craft Laney, along with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Rev. Henry McNeal Turner was selected for their contribution to the humanities of Georgia. This bust was erected in the front of the last home of Lucy Laney Craft.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was born and lived in Atlanta, Georgia, in the historic Sweet Auburn district. Auburn Avenue was known as the “richest Negro street in America” for its thriving businesses dedicated to community needs during the early and mid-twentieth century. Dr. King spoke of the importance of community economics in the African American community, and he personally invested in the community around him.

In recent years the imagery of African American men, women, and children being racially profiled and slain in the media has fueled racial tension that has begun the evaluation of the systematic portrayal and imagery of African American life and culture. In 2016 Netflix released TV-series “Luke Cage,” an African American superhero with the mission to save his Harlem community from crime and systematic oppression. For many African Americans, the image of Luke Cage can project a story of strength, determination, and pride.

In 2020 the world was hit with the Covid-19 epidemic that sent shelter-in-place orders throughout the United States. During the epidemic, Atlanta, Ga, was one of the cities hit hardest with the effects of the viral infection. The virus was unpredictable and unbiased but did not stop outdoor activities that could be kept at a distance. This item is the mask Keisha Lance Bottoms, former mayor of Atlanta, wore in 2020.
